Book Crossing 2017

At John Mackintosh Square

 Time - 10am - 2pm

History of Book-Crossing

Book-Crossing is defined as "the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.  The concept began in order to encourage the aim to "make the whole world a library."  The idea was originally conceived in 2001 and has expanded and grown throughout the world.

The initiative has developed so that books are "set free" into public places or hotspots where others will “catch” them. Books may be left at “Official Book-Crossing Zones" (OBCZs) which can be located in coffee shopscafes, restaurants and other public places. The purpose of these locations is to get members in the area to leave books to share with the public.

Many unofficial conventions or "unconventions" take place at other locations and times throughout the year, this makes it easier for Book-Crossers who cannot travel internationally to the convention to gather and share their love of books.

Book-Crossing introduces readers to authors and genres that they may not have read before.  It also encourages more people to take up or reclaim reading as a hobby.

Local Event

At our Local Event, members of the public will be able to bring and to take books that others have “released”.  Gibraltar Cultural Services' staff will be available at the venue for any questions that people may have or to discuss the idea in general.

Children are also encouraged to exchange books, but they must be accompanied by an adult.

Organised by Marocatlas Gibraltar 4x4 Club.

From 9am to 2pm.

Recent stand out MTV live music collaborations include MTV Crashes, Club MTV and not forgetting the flagship MTV European Music Awards which last year took place in Rotterdam.

The Minister of Culture, the Hon Steven Linares, said: "I'm really pleased to see how our Partnership with MTV is developing. The Gibraltar Calling festival will continue the success it has had over the past 5 years and will now be exposed to the whole world. I'm sure that the people of Gibraltar will support this venture and will enjoy this World Class Event." For further information on the event please visit the website www.gibraltarcalling.com

National Day 2017

Various Locations

From 10.30am - 1am

Gibraltar National Day, celebrated annually on 10 September, is the official national day of Gibraltar. The day commemorates Gibraltar's first referendum of 1967, in which Gibraltarians were asked whether they wished to either pass under Spanish sovereignty or remain under British sovereignty.

The official Gibraltar National Day events usually begin with a children’s fancy dress competition followed by a number street parties and musical performances, the main one taking place at Casemates Square. There are also a number of short speeches by local and visiting UK MPs and other dignitaries.

The day long festivities culminates with a spectacular fireworks display released from the detached mole in Gibraltar Harbour at night followed by a rock concert.

11 October 2017 to 15 October 2017

Eurafrica Trail

Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar is delighted to announce that Gibraltar will be the starting

point for the Eurafrica Trail 2017.

The Eurafrica Trail is the first mountain race in the world to be held between two continents and three countries.

Gibraltar will now form part of the race’s third edition, with the two previous events having had over 200 volunteers and 1,000 participants from 9 different countries. Participants will face a new challenge in Eurafrica 2017; added to the already established stages of the 25 or 50 kms leg in the Alcornocales Natural Park and the final 40kms leg in Chefchaouen, Morocco, participants will now have a 4km vertical climb from Europa Point to O’ Hara’s Battery (via Mediterranean Steps) to contend with. The Gibraltar Vertical Climb will be the starting point of an unprecedented race which will start on Wednesday 11th October and be completed over five days finishing on Sunday the 15th October in Chefchaoeun.

The event has grown exponentially and has now established relationships with mainstream and specialized media partners around the world. Eurafrica Trail also has over 10,000 subscribers and its website statistics depict over 1.5 million online hits.

In addition to the competitive side of the event the Eurafrica Trail organisers are very conscious of the natural environment within which the race is held and the communities that it involves. Thanks to this element of social responsibility, initiatives such as the planting of the Eurafrica Forest have taken place. This project reversed the carbon footprint of the event last year with the cleaning of river channels in the Alcornocales Natural Park in Cadiz also undertaken in 2016. To this end the Ministry for the Environment will explore avenues of mutual interest to elaborate projects for the very near future.

Registration for the event opens on the 30th March and can be accessed via www.eurafricatrail.com. Local enthusiasts are encouraged to participate and share what will be a unique experience.
