‘Selecting the Gibraltar National Dance Team for the

2015 IDO European Championships’

The Gibraltar National Dance Organisation has started its selection process for dancers to compete at the forthcoming IDO European Show Dance Championships that will be held in Gibraltar in October 2015.

The GNDO shall be organising the Gibraltar National Championships from the 7 to 9 May 2015 at the John Mackintosh Hall Theatre. The championships will follow the same procedure of national competitions as accredited by the world governing body, the International Dance Organisation. The national show dance competition is open to all individual dancers, groups and schools in the Children, Junior and Adult divisions. The categories for this competition are Solo, Duet and Groups sections.

Dancers who qualify from this competition will join those dancers already selected for the Formation section, and will form the 2015 Gibraltar National Dance Team.

GNDO President, Seamus Byrne said,

The competition is the local qualifier to gain entry into the IDO European Show Dance Championships that will be staged in Gibraltar in October 2015. This is a unique opportunity for local dancers to compete at the prestigious IDO event in our homeland and for them to show the world the high standards that exist locally.

We are therefore hoping that all local dance schools and other individuals will be part of this exciting competition.’

Entry forms are available from local dance schools or by contacting the GNDO on e-mail: gndo@gibtelecom.net. The closing date for entries is Friday 20th March 2015.

The IDO European Championships, which have the full backing of Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar, will take place between the 1st and 4th October 2015.

  FESTIVAL ADJUDICATOR 2015

The music adjudicator, Dr Douglas Coombes, MBE, will be awarding trophies, medals or certificates in all classes over the festival weekend and The Albert Hammond Shields and the Allegro Trophies at the School Festival Day.

Douglas has been an adjudicator member of ‘The British and International Federation of Festivals’, since he was Assistant Music Advisor for Norfolk in 1963 adjudicating all over the UK and in Hong Kong, fitting it in around all his other activities which included school workshops, choir and conducting clinics, writing and composing and a twenty year stint as producer and broadcaster of such BBC radio programmes as ‘Singing Together’ and ‘Time and Tune’. His prolific output has included much material for young people to sing and play.  He is consultant to and conductor for the BBC TV Songs of Praise ‘School Choirs of the Year’ competition, and appears the length and breadth of the country in his highly interactive Music Scene presentations in schools.

Douglas Coombes will be known to many in education, whether as teachers or as pupils and he has recently initiated the School’s Music Association Guild of Adjudicators and Workshop Presenters. He has always striven to combine music education with a sense of enjoyment and fun and this is frequently apparent when working with youngsters in Festivals – whether competitive or non-competitive. Commencing in the mid 1990s he became a member of the Board of ‘The British and International Federation of Festivals’, in his capacity as Chairman of the Adjudicators’ Council. He relinquished this position in 2013, when pressure of work prevented him spending sufficient time on BIFF matters, though he remains a staunch supporter of the Festival movement.

He has conducted countless choral and orchestral concerts in major concert halls and in the grounds of many stately homes with the New English Concert Orchestra which he founded in 1988. He also undertakes considerable in-service training for teachers. He has recently been honoured to have been awarded an MBE for services to music.

FESTIVAL ADJUDICATOR 2015 - ELENA COBB CLASSES

Hi, I’m Elena! I am the author of ‘Higgledy Piggledy Jazz’ series.

After many years of studying and teaching, I am convinced that the child who is stuck in front of the music is an unhappy child. I was determined for my students to go from ‘Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star’ to Rachmaninoff and Chopin without losing interest. To get them to stay focused, and inspire them to practice at home I composed jazzy, child-orientated tunes and they loved them! I want to share it with you! Keeping in mind that piano practice can be lonely, I have recorded a play-along CD that gives the beginner an opportunity to feel like a bandleader and a star!

All tunes from my Higgledy Piggledy Jazz for piano are interactive with other instrumental books in the series - check out my site where you can preview and listen to every tune. If you have more advanced students, you might be interested to have a look at my pieces for aspiring pianists from the book ‘Blue River’ and the newest edition ‘Arabia Étude-Tableaux’ for piano solo.

My latest book is ‘My Piano Trip to London’ a collection of pieces for beginners that captures the young pianist's imagination with catchy titles, brilliant illustrations and stickers to decorate the pieces. The pieces are suitable for complete beginners up to two or three terms' tuition. The secondo duet part has lively accompaniments that bring the pieces to life.

I want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to all teachers around the world who are already using my music in their lessons. For more information visit www.elenacobb.com.

FESTIVAL ACCOMPANIST – LIZ HEATH

An accomplished pianist, this will be the third year that we are delighted to have Liz Heath accompanying our festival entrants.

Liz has performed as a soloist, session musician and in bands for many years. As a musician and teacher her love of music has taken her all over the world. She enjoys all aspects of music and has been very busy working as accompanist here in Gibraltar for many years now, becoming a familiar face on the local music scene.

Liz is very much looking forward to accompanying the performers again at this year’s festival. She has a knack of putting all the young performers at ease, helping them to grow in confidence with each performance.

Gibraltar National Dance Championships

Venue: John Mackintosh Hall Theatre, Main Street
Organised by the Gibraltar National Dance Organisation for further information contact the GNDO on mobile: +35058009031 or email: gndo@gibtelecom.net

Although every edition of the Gibraltar International Song Festival (GISF) has witnessed an increase in the number of songs received, the coming edition – due to be held at the Tercentenary Sports Hall on Saturday 9 May, 2015 – has broken all records. Close to 700 songs have been received, some from surprising countries of origin, such as the United Arab Emirates, India, Indonesia, Malawi and Vietnam.

The full list of the 30 countries from which entries have been received  is as follows (in alphabetical order):Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, France, Georgia, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malawi, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, UK, Venezuela and Vietnam.

The undeniable fact is that, year by year, the GISF is reaching an ever-wider international audience, resulting in the receipt of songs of great quality, diversity and cultural/ethnic influences. Each edition also acts as an important shop window for the authors and composers whose songs are sung live on the night, as well as for the singers who perform them. The whole show is live streamed via partners in Latin America, Europe, Russia and surrounding regions, as well as the GISF website itself, to a potential worldwide audience of over 100 million.

GISF is also living proof of one of music’s central premises: that music knows no frontiers. In this, it receives valuable support from the UK’s PRS for Music (the UK’s Performing Right Society) and Spain’s Sociedad General de Autores, y Editores. Both organisations publicise the festival via their internal and website communications with their members, thus reaching both their national and international memberships, providing them with a direct link to the GISF’s own website.

A SPECIAL EVENING WITH STEVE HOGARTH & FRIENDS

CONCERT

Marillion frontman Steve Hogarth will return to Gibraltar for a unique concert that promises to be

unlike any other of his solo performances. The incomparable setting of Saint Michael’s Cave is the

venue for a concert that has already attracted international interest, such is the anticipation for this

special musical event taking place on Saturday 30th May.

The concert, announced today by promoters GibMedia, is fully supported by Gibraltar Cultural

Services and HM Government of Gibraltar and has been made possible thanks to the contribution of

the event’s partners and main sponsors, Isolas and Fiduciary. In addition, the organisers are grateful to

Gibtelecom, Lewis Stagnetto Limited, GibOil, Sovereign Group and Chesterton for sponsoring this

event that forms part of the Gibraltar Spring Festival of Art and Culture.

Steve Hogarth - also known as ‘h’ - is a gifted singer, songwriter and musician who has fronted the

legendary Marillion for over 25 years, helping reinvigorate and constantly redefine the band’s sound

via a succession of inventive, emotional albums like “Brave”, “Marbles”, “Seasons End” or the more

recent “Sounds That Can’t Be Made”. A vibrant musical force, to those who already love Marillion,

they’re something special; to everyone else they're a love affair waiting to happen.

Central to the appeal and success of the Progressive Rock legends over the past 25 years has been the

unmistakable voice and charisma of Steve Hogarth. It was in 2006 that he first embarked on his ‘h

Natural’ solo project, a series of intimate shows featuring just himself and a piano that already graced

Saint Michael’s Cave almost a decade ago and King’s Chapel last year. A good friend of Gibraltar,

Steve was intent on returning: “This will be my fourth time performing in my beloved Gibraltar. Last

year’s Literary Festival gig in the King’s Chapel was truly special for me and I came home with that

rare feeling that I had ‘nailed it’. Must be something in the water… I immediately began hustling to

return, so the chance to play once again in the unique space that is St Michael’s Cave is, well, icing on

the cake. Unlike my usual strictly-solo shows, this time my son, Nial, will join me on stage to play

cajon, and I’m also thrilled to have the fabulous Dave Gregory on hand to play guitar. Can’t wait.”

Nial is an accomplished drummer and this will be the first time father and son perform together,

although Dave Gregory is no stranger to working with Steve. A member of the band XTC for 19 years,

performing on the hits “Making Plans For Nigel”, “Senses Working Overtime” and twelve studio

albums, as well as recording with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Take That’s Mark Owen, Dave is well

known to Marillion fans through his work on Steve Hogarth’s solo album “Ice Cream Genius” and as a

member of Steve’s star-studded h Band. The addition of these special guests will give a different, novel

feel to what is already a show that will appeal to any music lover and not just Marillion fans. Warming

the audience will be the attractive vocals of Megan Dallas, who makes a welcome return to Gibraltar,

before Steve works his magic via a repertoire that will be culled from his 25 years with Marillion but

will also include covers of songs that have touched him throughout his life. Steve will interact with the

audience, accept requests and fill the outstanding acoustics of the Cave with the sounds of David

Bowie, Kate Bush or John Lennon.

This is not the usual ‘h Natural’ show. This is different. For one show only and exclusively in

Gibraltar, this is h (Super)Natural. It’s going to be special. It’s going to be unique. It’s going to

be unforgettable.

Tickets, which include a coach transfer to and from the Cave, are priced at £20 and are available to

purchase from Music Corner as well as online at www.buytickets.gi. Further details on the concert can

be found at www.gibmedia.gi
