National Day 2017

Various Locations

From 10.30am - 1am

Gibraltar National Day, celebrated annually on 10 September, is the official national day of Gibraltar. The day commemorates Gibraltar's first referendum of 1967, in which Gibraltarians were asked whether they wished to either pass under Spanish sovereignty or remain under British sovereignty.

The official Gibraltar National Day events usually begin with a children’s fancy dress competition followed by a number street parties and musical performances, the main one taking place at Casemates Square. There are also a number of short speeches by local and visiting UK MPs and other dignitaries.

The day long festivities culminates with a spectacular fireworks display released from the detached mole in Gibraltar Harbour at night followed by a rock concert.

11 October 2017 to 15 October 2017

Eurafrica Trail

Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar is delighted to announce that Gibraltar will be the starting

point for the Eurafrica Trail 2017.

The Eurafrica Trail is the first mountain race in the world to be held between two continents and three countries.

Gibraltar will now form part of the race’s third edition, with the two previous events having had over 200 volunteers and 1,000 participants from 9 different countries. Participants will face a new challenge in Eurafrica 2017; added to the already established stages of the 25 or 50 kms leg in the Alcornocales Natural Park and the final 40kms leg in Chefchaouen, Morocco, participants will now have a 4km vertical climb from Europa Point to O’ Hara’s Battery (via Mediterranean Steps) to contend with. The Gibraltar Vertical Climb will be the starting point of an unprecedented race which will start on Wednesday 11th October and be completed over five days finishing on Sunday the 15th October in Chefchaoeun.

The event has grown exponentially and has now established relationships with mainstream and specialized media partners around the world. Eurafrica Trail also has over 10,000 subscribers and its website statistics depict over 1.5 million online hits.

In addition to the competitive side of the event the Eurafrica Trail organisers are very conscious of the natural environment within which the race is held and the communities that it involves. Thanks to this element of social responsibility, initiatives such as the planting of the Eurafrica Forest have taken place. This project reversed the carbon footprint of the event last year with the cleaning of river channels in the Alcornocales Natural Park in Cadiz also undertaken in 2016. To this end the Ministry for the Environment will explore avenues of mutual interest to elaborate projects for the very near future.

Registration for the event opens on the 30th March and can be accessed via Local enthusiasts are encouraged to participate and share what will be a unique experience.

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust is inviting nominations from the public for this year’s round of Heritage Awards.

The Heritage Awards have been presented annually by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust since 1993. The awards will be made for outstanding sensitivity or contribution to Gibraltar’s heritage. They may be made to an individual (including juniors under the age of 16), group, team, club, firm or company for a positive contribution, of any kind, that has enhanced Gibraltar’s heritage, or for exceptional, successful efforts in preserving a part of Gibraltar’s heritage. The object of the awards is to recognise heritage conservation projects and developments and encourage the involvement of the community in achieving high standards of restoration of buildings, structures and monuments in Gibraltar, thus promoting public recognition and awareness of Gibraltar’s heritage and history.

There are four categories of Award:

 Junior Heritage Award: Awarded to projects carried out by a school, youth group or individual under the age of 16.

 Group Heritage Award: Awarded to companies, groups or developers.

 Individual Heritage Award: Awarded to projects undertaken by private individuals

 Special Commendation: Awarded at the discretion of the Board of the Heritage Trust to individuals, groups or companies felt to have contributed to the positive promotion of heritage issues.

What is eligible?

It is very difficult to define ‘heritage’ and for this reason the scope of the awards are wide. Consideration is given to the nomination of any Gibraltar-heritage related project such as the preservation or sensitive refurbishment of a building, structure, monument or historic garden, school projects, publications, heritage related events, a piece of research or a work of art, protection of an important tree or trees that would have been felled, or preservation of important records that would have been lost, recognition of the efforts of an individual who has worked towards the preservation of Gibraltar’s Heritage.

Who can enter?

Entry is open from any individual, group or organisation for example: developers, architects, engineers and contractors involved in restoration, new or maintenance

work; Landlords and property owning bodies; Schools and youth groups; organisations and societies; businesses; private individuals.

Further details about the awards and nomination forms can be obtained from the Trust’s office at the Main Guard, 13 John Mackintosh Square, Mondays to Fridays, during normal office hours or can be requested by email from or downloaded from our website.

The Trust hopes that members of the public will participate by nominating candidates.

Closing date for nominations is Tuesday the 19th of September.
