Accessible Facilities
Upper Rock attractions
As Gibraltar offers such a wide variety of attractions and venues to visit, it remains part of our goal to deliver these experiences to all visitors to Gibraltar.
Whilst we are taking all possible steps to meet the requirements of all of our visitors, some of Gibraltar’s major attractions face particular difficulties in providing access for persons with mobility, visual or hearing impairments.
In the light that not all attractions are totally accessible, the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Climate Change may provide free access, for further information please email us at ur&beaches@gibraltar.gov.gi or telephone: +350 20071648 (0900 to 1630 hrs during winter hours / 0800 to 1430 hrs during summer hours).
Beaches
The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Climate Change, being the principal service provider for beaches in Gibraltar, holds the responsibility to provide access to our beaches and existing beach facilities.
Where possible access ramps have been built from the road level to the actual beach. Suitably equipped Changing Places toilets are available at Eastern Beach, Camp Bay and the Gibraltar Bathing Pavilion. At Camp Bay, a series of access ramps leading from the main road on to the various levels of this lido beach, are available, allowing access all the way to the actual shoreline. There are parking spaces for Blue Badge holders at Eastern Beach, Western Beach, Catalan Bay, Camp Bay and Little Bay.
The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Climate Change also provides the Beaches Accessibility Service that operates during the Official Bathing Season (2nd Saturday in June to mid-September) at Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay, Camp Bay and Western Beach.
Trained Beach Accessibility Attendants, with the aid of specialised equipment; amphibious chairs, mobile hoists and sand walking aids, will assist people with restricted mobility to access the beach and the sea. The mobile hoists provide easy transfer facilities from your personal wheelchair to our beach equipment. Each unit has a pergola providing a certain element of privacy to carry out transfers as well as affording a shaded area for users to enjoy. Further to this, the Accessible Service Unit at Eastern Beach provides users with three beach tents with storage space that are available on loan for a maximum of a week. This specific service may be pre-booked. The Beach Accessibility Attendants will assist users with their transfer to the beach equipment and into the sea whenever required. However, once in water, the Attendant will not remain in their company. The responsibility lies with the service users, carers or guardians throughout the entire process.
