HMGoG is pleased to announce, as part of the Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Plan, the launch of Gibraltar’s new bicycle hire scheme, which will be known as ‘Redibike’. The scheme’s main aim is to provide easy access to bicycles and therefore encourage cycling as a viable, healthy and environmentally sustainable alternative mode of transport, as is becoming commonplace in major cities around the world.

The initial phase of the scheme, which has been sponsored by GibOil, comprises of 105 bicycles and 120 docking points spread over 13 locations throughout Gibraltar from the Airport to New Mole House. Gibraltar Car Parks Limited has entered into a contractual Agreement with Gibraltar Parking Management Services Limited who will operate the scheme, produced by ‘hourbike’, a tried and tested UK company in this field. This system has been successfully deployed in the UK, France, Poland, Saudi Arabia and the Czech Republic, with the largest scheme at present comprising of 1000 bicycles in Liverpool.

The scheme will be operational on a 24/7 basis, the bicycles incorporating lights specifically for this purpose. The bicycles are also fitted with a carrier, a bicycle locking device, a bell and a protected driveshaft propulsion mechanism to reduce potential mechanical problems.

The intention is that locals and commuters alike will take up this initiative, enthusiastically, as a viable alternative to the car.

An interactive map of docking station locations, together with registration information can be easily accessed on the scheme’s website www.redibike.gi. The website also allows users to see how many bicycles are available at each docking station and how many free docks are available to return bicycles. Users are allowed to rent up to three bicycles simultaneously at any given time. There is also an App available for Android and iOS systems from the respective App stores.

The Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, The Hon Paul Balban said: “It gives me great pleasure in announcing the launch of the new Redibike Scheme. This is one of the key projects of the STTPP, not only will it help encourage the use of alternative and sustainable modes of travel but it will also help keep our population fit and healthy. I would like to thank our sponsors ‘Gib Oil’ for their firm support and belief in our project, ‘hourbike’ our supplier who have led us by the hand and Gibraltar Parking Management Services Limited who will now be responsible for the success of our scheme.”
