The Gibraltar Heritage Trust is an independent statutory body entrusted with the preservation of Gibraltar’s heritage and aims to work in partnership with all like-minded bodies, both locally and internationally.
Funds for all of the Trust’s projects are raised by the Trust through our annual membership drive, our commercial activities or through specific project targeted fundraising. All funds generated are applied to achieving the aims and objectives of the Trust.
Our offices are located on the first floor of The Main Guard, an 18th century guard house just off John Mackintosh Square with an interesting history. The first references to the building are found in the mid-18th century and appears in plans drawn up of the ‘parade ground’ (John Mackintosh Square) with clear references to ‘The Main Guard’. It was thought to be severely damaged during the Great Siege but remained in use as a guard house until the early 20th century. It was handed over to the City Council and in 1920 was converted into a City Fire Station where alterations were made to the building to suit these requirements. After the Second World War, it was used for a short time as a public bath house and later converted into offices for the payment of public utility bills and road licensing. In 2001 it became the offices of the Trust and has undergone multiple renovations since. To the back of the building is our green patio oasis which is filled with an array of plants and historical artefacts which have been donated or salvaged.
On the ground floor you will find our Gift & Bookshop with a selection of Gibraltar related and featured products and books. You can browse our online shop too: https://shop.gibraltarheritagetrust.org.gi
