Levana 27th June 2024
10th Edition of the Gibraltar World Music Festival (GWMF)
The GWMF, born in 2012, is celebrating its 10th Edition on the 27th June at St Michael’s Cave offering a new show that we expect to be unclassifiable.
This year’s theme, chosen to address the strong need to rebirth after the Covid years that left Culture, particularly in Gibraltar, sterile, is linked to tapping into the wonderful female energy. This energy is seen as the fundamental force for a renaissance.
While some may find that LEVANA was a Roman Goddess associated with childbirth, it also signifies “white” in Hebrew, and is used to name the full moon. What better representation of female connection than the full moon and its influences on us, our mothers, sisters, and partners?
To represent LEVANA, the Artistic Directors selected three powerful artists: Ana Carla Maza. Sian Pottok and Michelle Davis
Ana Carla Maza started to play piano at the age of 5 and was born in La Havana, Cuba on the 14th June like Che Guevara! She now lives in Paris. She is the most wanted artist in Jazz Festivals around Europe. Mastering the cello, she infuses it with Brazilian Bossa Nova, Tango, Samba, and other Cuban sounds.
Sîan Pottok, born in Florida, combines Indian, African, Belgium and Slovak origins. She will take us on a unique musical trip with her Kamele Ngoni (traditional Harp from West Africa), Brass and waves of Electro. She is also a renown photographer focusing on women and children. Her artistic vision places her beside artists such as Bjork or Yael Naim.
Michelle David was raised in a Church in NYC and took part in Broadway musicals such as Mama, The Sound of Motown and Mahalia. Since then, she has delivered all over the world a powerful live experience with her band, the True Stones. Welcome to the world of R&B, Soul and Gospel.
Our night in the cave promises another unique and unforgettable experience, and all in Gibraltar.
